WFRP vs DND

Postby C Swizzy » Thu Jul 15, 2010 11:00 pm

Let's start a discussion on Warhammer Fantasy Role Play vs Dungeons and Dragons. I have played both and while DnD is the good old standard that I've always played with, I do like WFRP. I forgot what edition it was (i think 2nd?) but I like how the system was simpler than DND at the time.

So who has played WFRP? How do you feel it stands up to DND?

WFRP is all about the grit. The world is against you. The taint of chaos is around every corner. Expect to spend a lot of time trying to scrape together enough coin for the next meal. The common dog can kill you, quickly.

DnD is all about being the hero. The ladies love you. Every monster has at least a few coin, you only have to kill them to get it. Usually takes a few goblins to kill you.

I would caution against the DnD 4th Ed. though. It has been tooled around to appeal to the WoW crowd and plays as such. Nothing against it, but for me the peniultimate version was DnD 3.0/3.5.

Since those versions have stopped being supported I have moved on to Pathfinder. It just came out in the final version a few months ago. It plays like DnD 3.5 but has repaired the most wonky bits. Overall a very satsifying game mechanic. $40 gets you the core book which has the player material and the GM material. Bestiary and a dedicated GM guide (not required to play) are also out there. All DnD 3.0/3.5 material is backwards compatible to Pathfinder.

I have not played the new WFRP, as the price is a lot prohibitive for me, but I have played D&D 4.0, and I can't think of any game that is worse than 4.0...

I was a big fan of D&D, specifically Forgotten Realms, but in this version of the rules, the game has gone to more of a "D&D for Dummies" style of play, where instead of creating your character with various skills and attributes that make your character different from others, in this edition, a Fighter is a Fighter, and has the same skills and perks, the only differences being one or 2 things that you, the player, can change...

its like the old red box D&D form the 80s, if you're an elf, you elf, you cannot dwarf, you can never dwarf, nor can you ever have a skill that could make you try to do dwarf things...that's how I see the current version of D&D...

perhaps a better comparison between WFRP and a similar game is Pathfinder, which from all accounts (from those people I know that have played it), is more like AD&D 3.5.1, fixed...
your lord and master...
