When brother slays brother, a homebrew hex-campaign

Postby Masterofmayhem » Sun Jun 06, 2010 8:30 pm

Hey there. I am a SM/IG player from Finland. I have been playing on and off from the third edition. Firstly thanks for keeping my painting motivation high. I battle the inevitable boredom by listening to DLT (and the 11th...). Some shows are good, some less good but all of them have been very entertaining, so thanks.

Anyway, I joined the forum because of your interest in campaigns. For a while now I have been making a homebrew campaign for me and my friend. It will soon be completed, so I thought I would share it with you. It will hopefully be fully written by next week's wednesday. I will upload the Word file somewhere and then post a link here for anyone interested to download it. I hope to get opinions, constructive comments and suggestions on improvement.

Shortly put, the campaign starts with a prologue part which is linear and story based. This then quickly transforms into an open-ended hex-based (non-planetary empires) campaign with randomized battle sizes, changing FOC charts, rules for attrition of tanks, sectors with strategic assets effecting gameplay. The campaign is meant for space marine armies, but can be used with other armies as well. It has been rather streamlined while keeping many strategic decisions to be made. An example of this would be to either secure a city in order to be able to recruit imperial guardsmen from the local populace, or go for a weapons factory in order to gain access to defensive weapons platforms, or to go for spaceport in order to speed up the pace reserves can be brought onto the field of battle.

Whew. The campaign book is now done, and it comes with 24 pages in total. I suck at photoshopping, so I had to learn a lot while making the graphics (100% original, woot) and that was what slowed down the whole process. I am still looking for somewhere to upload the book to. If anyone has any suggestions on how to upload it, please let me know.

I am aware that I just arrived here and have not taken part in any other conversations. This is because I have been so busy making the campaign and real life, that I haven't had a chance to even check the other parts of the forums. Hopefully once I get this uploaded, there will be more time for such luxuries. Anyway, I apologize if this is a weird way to introduce oneself to new forums.

EDIT: Here is a link to the document. It is hosted on Scribd.com and you can either read it online or download it. As I said before, any comments are welcome. http://www.scribd.com/doc/32796796/When-Brother-Slays-Brother

2nd EDIT: For some reason, Scribd shows the images at the end of the book in the wrong places. Hopefully this problem does not remain once the document is downloaded. If it is so, I will upload an updated version with the stacked images merged.

I see that a dozen people have read the campaign now. What did you guys think about it? Has anyone considered about implementing parts of it to ongoing campaigns or starting a new one?

A big hei from Minnesota! I'll be checking it out over the next week as part of my research to set up a campaign for this Fall at the FFG Event Center. I'll let you know what I think, but it might not be right away since I've got finals this next week :-) Cheers!

Well a big hey from Siilinjärvi too :D Was away for a while, so couldn't really answer before now. I will eagerly await your feedback. Where can I then get information on your research on campaigns? It never hurts to know what others have done, so I would be interested in reading any publications you bring forth.

I'm getting a new phone here in the next couple days, which normally wouldn't have anything to do with this, but it'll be my impetus to start blogging as I'll be able to upload pictures and video and the like with very little effort. (Going from a 4 year old low end digital camera and a 7 year old flip phone to a Droid 2 - whoo!) As the escalation league for 40k stops, I'm going to be wrangling players together to form a gaming club so as to arrange pick up games a bit easier. I'm just now getting on break from classes, so I'll keep you posted!
